Like most Italian cities, the Rome same-sex attracted scene is petite; particularly since there are not many gay bars in Rome. When I first came here in 2017, there were just the two staple bars on the homosexual street next to the Colosseum: Coming Out and My Bar.

But in recent years, the homosexual Rome bars include started to get off in popularity, and they are not all centered around the Colosseum (although close enough to the capital center).

On top of it, unlike in other European countries, Rome's gay bars often double as trattorias or place to get an aperitivo, but that is quintessential Italians for you, who are serious about combining alcohol intake with long, leisurely dinners 🤌.

The optimal advice is to come early for dinner or aperitivo and leave slow to head to some of Rome's gay clubs or gay parties.

In real life, the average gay bar is simply a pub where most of the regular patrons are of gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender/genderqueer persuasion. That's really all there is to it. Mostly they are just places where LGBT+ people socialize, dance, have a few beers, play pool, survey the game, etc. Sometimes people chat up/pick up a modern partner in these places just as straight people do in straight bars and pubs.
