Welcome back, beautiful bi bookworms! Sometimes, during these transitional seasons, it’s tough to find the right guide for the changing weather. So, I thought I would dive into an arresting yet breezy peruse that deals with heavier themes around sexuality and identity. So with that, I submit The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017) by Taylor Jenkins Reid for the consent of you esteemed members of the Bi Novel Club Society.
Before I obtain too far into this glamorous drama, please record that this review will contain a few SPOILERS , but I’m going to keep some of the juiciest morsels in the dark because there are some twists I don’t want to ruin.
Written as a fictional memoir, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo centers on the retelling of the eponymous character’s life, a glamorous actress from the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Evelyn (clearly a hybrid of Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe , and a handful of other cinematic screen goddesses) reaches out to novice magazine writer Monique to do a write-up. Calling The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo a masterpiece, this is not an exaggeration. I absolutely adored the story writing, the characters, pacing and story building. Evelyn feels real, legitimate, and dynamic, she is a woman who dominates the page and draws you into her life with promise of glamour, sex, romance, and sacrifice.
The novel follows Monique, a young scribe who has been personally requested by Evelyn to write a biography about her life and finally reveal the saucy, the scandalous and the vulnerable. I don’t comprehend if Taylor Jenkins Reid is multi-attracted . I’m not sure if I crave to know. All I know is that her way of conveying the sort of cherish you never unlearn in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is simply uncanny.
The 2017 novel brought this old-fashioned lesbian to my knees, reminiscing of a love – and a broken heart – I thought I was over with. If that’s not worth tearing one’s hair out in a review, I don’t know what is. Ergo, I’m about to tell you why, no matter your sexual or gender identity, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is a jewel of contemporary literature that you MUST hold on your bookshelves. Whether you’re overdue to the trend or not, this story is timeless.
