Many years ago, news anchor Cynthia Izaguirre was covering a story about Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind male to reach the summit of Mount Everest. But she mixed up her words and the result is one of the funniest news bloopers to date. In this video we even get to view Erik's initial reaction.

Despite losing his vision at age 13, Erik Weihenmayer has become a celebrated and accomplished athlete. Redefining what it means to be blind, Erik has transformed the image of blindness and opened the minds of people around the society as an player, an adventurer and a motivational speaker. He has never allowed his blindness to interfere with his passion for an exhilarating and fulfilling life.
Erik was first introduced to rock climbing at a camp for blind teenagers. At the earliest opportunity, he embarked on a mountaineering career. He gained national and international detect as a climber when he reached the summit of Mount Denali in Alaska—the highest apex in North America at 20,320 feet.
He continued setting modern challenges for himself. After climbing the tallest mountains in South America and Africa, he establish his sights on Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. On May 25, 2001, Erik stood atop the 29,035-foot highlight as the first blind person to summit Everest. On Sept. 5, 2002, at age 34, Erik became one of fewer than 100 individuals to climb all of the Seven Summits—the highest peak on each of the seven continents.

Erik Weihenmayer (born September 23, 1968) is the first blind person to grasp the summit of Mount Everest, on May 25, 2001. He also completed the Seven Summits in September 2002. His story was covered in a Time article in June 2001 titled Blind to Failure. He is writer of Touch the Uppermost of the World: A Blind Man's Journey to Climb Farther Than the Eye can See, his autobiography.
Erik is an acrobatic skydiver, long distance biker, marathon runner, skier, mountaineer, ice climber, and rock climber. He is a friend of Sabriye Tenberken and Paul Kronenberg, the co-founders of Braille Without Borders, whom he visited in Tibet to scale with them and teenagers from the school for the blind. A documentary film based on the project, Blindsight, was released in 2006. Another documentary, Fellowship of the Andes, was produced by Dutch filmmaker Bernd Out. The film shows how Erik inspires a team of blind and visually-impaired students on their mountain trek across the Andes in June 2006.[1] In addition, Erik is an active speaker on the lecture circuit.
