20 Disney Characters Confirmed (Or Speculated) To Be Queer

As one of the highest companies in its field, fans, critics, and the widespread look to Disney for leadership, study the themes in its movies, and praise or criticize the company for how it reflects the world. Among the points of interest is how LGBTQ people and their concerns are represented. Following the times, and in a few cases leading them, Disney has had characters in its films that audiences contain perceived to be part of the queer community. However, some of these depictions have been more forward than others.

Few Disney characters are explicitly declared to be lgbtq+ by the studio or its filmmakers, but viewers own picked up on "gay coding," sense characters exhibiting traits corresponding with LGBTQ. Aud Bool on the blog Prezi describes the term: "Coded gay is when a male lover stereotype, 'gay behaviors' or 'camp' are used to signal that a traits is homosexual while never explicitly stating that they are." I don't know about you, but as a Gen Z'er, I spent practically every waking hour of childhood watching TV shows on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. OK, so maybe not EVERY waking hour, but I watched it as much as I could.

And as it turns out, some of our fave stars who we grew up adoring actually ended up coming out as LGBTQ+ long after their time as child stars ended. So it's about time we celebrate them, shall we? Let's go!

1.Gotta start with our lady, Raven-Symoné. She came out as gay publicly in 2013, ten years after That’s So Raven first aired. She said she’s known since she was 12, though, while she was on the show. Raven got married to her wife, Miranda Pearman-Maday, in 2020!

2.Miley Cyrus, like the absolute icon that she is, came out as pansexual in 2016. She opened up about how she's "always hated the word 'bisexual,'" because she felt it put her "in a box," and also said her first-ever relationship was "with a chick." ALL HAIL THE QUEEEEEN!

Garrett Clayton

You probably recognize Garrett from the DCOMs Teen Beach Feature and Teen Beach 2, but he's since taken on new projects fond the movie Reach. Actress Josie Totah shared that she was transgender in a personal essay for TIME in August 2018. She previously starred in the Disney Channel hit show Jessie and opposite Mindy Kaling in the series Champions. "When my friends and family call me Josie, it feels like I’m being seen. It’s something everyone wants, to touch understood," she wrote.

Joey Pollari

We knew him as Miles in Avalon Steep before he hit the big screens as a potential interest for Simon, the title character in the viral movie Love, Simon. Disney Channel stars are often expected to be the ideal role models for their young fans and are told to avoid controversy at all costs -- which is why many actors from the network choose to store their personal experience as private as possible.

Since their manage on Disney ended, many stars contain admitted that they felt obligated to hide a part of themselves, especially if they were a member of the LGBTQ+ society. But in the years that followed, these queer stars have all opened up about their sexuality and own been welcomed with open arms by many of their fans.

Miley Cyrus came out as pansexual in 2015, sharing that she was “open to every available thing that is consenting and doesn't involve an animal and everyone is of age.” Miley later opened up about the moment she knew she was pansexual, explaining that she had always “hated the word ‘bisexual’” and didn’t know about pansexuality until taking a trip to the LGBTQ center in L.A.
