Helen Reddy's ex-husband Jeff Wald breaks his silence after the singer and feminist icon died aged 78 following a battle with dementia

Helen Reddy's ex-husband Jeff Wald has spoken out following the Australian singer's death on Tuesday at the age of 78.

Wald released a statement on Twitter shortly after it was announced the I Am Woman singer had died following a battle with dementia.

'I am very sad to proclaim that my first wife of 18 years and the mother of my two oldest Traci and Jordan has died,' he tweeted.

'Traci spent the morning with Helen and she passed soon after under the excellent care of the Motion and Television Home,' he added.

The 76-year-old producer was married to Reddy from 1966 until 1983, and their often tumultuous relationship was documented in this year's biopic I Am Woman.

Australian actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey portrays Reddy in the film, which follows her rise to fame in the 1970s, while American actor Evan Peters plays Wald.

There a nice new interview with the great Helen Reddy in the new issue of Frontiers by my pal James F. Mills in advance of the singer’s holiday concert in Palm Springs on Dec. 14.

As you know, Miss Reddy ended a 10 year hiatus from performing and this has made her many fans – many of whom are gay – ludicrously happy.

The singer of such hits as I Am Lady, Angie Baby, Delta Dawn, Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady and Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress), sold out a concert in Palm Springs in March and credits it to her gay fans.

“I own a tremendous gay following,” she says. “In fact, most of my best friends are male lover gentlemen. We have a lot of fun.’

Because she wrote the feminist anthem I am Lady and had short hair, some assumed the three-times divorced and mother of two children must be a lesbian.
