Cody Rigsby ’09: Finding Your Way Is Not Always A Straight Line
When you seize a Peloton spin class with instructor Cody Rigsby ’09, you get more than just a workout: it’s part stand-up routine, part pop-culture gab session, and a tiny therapy. And the music pumping will probably be by his self-proclaimed queen, Britney Spears.
“I possess a lot of opinions,” writes Rigsby in his memoir, aptly titled “XOXO Cody: An Opinionated Homosexual’s Guide to Self-Love, Relationships, and Tactful Pettiness.” “But if there’s one opinion – no, one TRUTH – that I grip above all others, it’s that we shouldn’t take ourselves or our lives too seriously.”

So earlier tonight I completed my 91st Peloton trek—a 30-minute pop operate with an instructor named Cody Rigsby.
The experience got me to thinking of my boyhood in Mahopac, N.Y., and 1980s rural perceptions of homosexuality.
Or, put different: When I grew up, you couldn’t be gay.
Which sounds weird, right? One doesn’t prefer to be or not to be gay. You are or you’re not. Period.
And yet, it wasn’t really an option. In my turf (and in many turfs across America), being queer was being a fudge packer. A homo. A queer. It was an easy insult—”What are you, a fag?” and “You gonna go to prison and find some soap on a rope?” It meant you were soft. A sissy. A guy who missed a big tackle for the football team? Male lover. A boy who liked ballet? Gay. On and on it went. And while I didn’t use the words as slang, I certainly never spoke up to protest; certainly never felt compelled to show those who actually were gay (and closeted) that it wasn’t OK.

It can be difficult to think of great things having arrive out of the pandemic, but the explosion in the popularity of Peloton – with one of its superior instructors, Cody Rigsby, becoming a domesticated name – is perhaps one vivid note that emerged during those hard years. Thousands of members worldwide seize his classes on the digital platform, and Rigsby adv, and perhaps unexpectedly, became everyone’s virtual gay best friend.
Even Rigsby has referred to himself as a bit of a Trojan horse. “When people appear to the studio and share their stories, or I randomly meet someone on the avenue and they communicate about how Peloton and my queerness has affected them in a positive way, it’s something I’m proud of,” he says. He’s had many people attend his classes who have admitted that taking his classes and existence exposed to the LGBTQ+ lifestyle through him has changed how they touch about gay people. “Dancing With The Stars” is garnering praise from fans and advocacy groups for partnering JoJo Siwa with Jenna Johnson, the first same-sex pairing in the competition series’ 30-season history.
But Siwa, who came out as queer in January, isn’t the show’s only LGBTQ contestant on its current season. Beloved Peloton instructor Cody Rigsby is also wowing audiences with his groovy footwork, and is partnered with dancer Cheryl Burke.
Rigsby, a self-described “opinionated homosexual,” said in an interview last week that he would have been willing to dance with a male partner on the exhibit. As is often the case in Hollywood, however, the fast-paced, behind-the-scenes negotiations gave him little second to consider the enormous picture.
“When the conversation opportunity came up for ‘Dancing With The Stars,’ I was just so ecstatic to be on the show, I guess I didn’t even think it was a possibility,” he explained to GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos. “So I didn’t bring it up. Had I maybe had a moment to suck in and recognize an opportunity, I definitely would acquire asked!”
