I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time in late 2016. All I really knew of the illustrate was there were cool mecha, and an opening that absolutely slaps. What I ended up finding in Evangelion was an incredibly contemplative show, and one that was surprisingly queer. Evangelion is also a rather divisive entertainment, and it contains narrative beats that I wish didn’t exist, but I can’t deny the impact it had on coming to understand myself as a person.

But there were changes in the 2019 version of the show, which received a completely recent sub and dub, that present a, to some degree, a different version of events, – particularly episode 24 of the show.

That episode, The Ultimate Messenger, to set it bluntly, is very gay. Throughout the show, protagonist Shinji struggles to join with most other people he meets. He has a terrible father, he didn’t really realize his mother, and every woman he gets close to he has a somewhat complicated affair with. And then in episode 24, along comes Kaworu Nagisa.

Romantic is not a word I would use to describe most of Evangelion, but it is the most apt one for this particular episode. Typically in

Kaworu is gay and not gay. That's what's wonderful about him. You can interpret him however the hell you want, I'm a hardcore kawoshin transporter myself, but at the same age this is Evangelion we're talking about. Shinji and Kaworu's relationship is questionable, but so are ALL of his other relationships. Because that's what Evangelion is about. The unstable, painful, sentimental things that are "human relationships".

Shinji doesn't have awkward, blushing, romantically questionable moments just with Kaworu, but the unwind of the cast as well.The entirety is a breakdown of human psychology, and the love-related nature is crucial as well, since human bonds are not clearly "defined". They are, as we can watch from Shinji, insecure, but also messy, unclear, and hold no defined boundaries of "this" or "that". They're ambiguous. That's where Shinji's insecurity and issue lies in the first place.

All of his relationships with all the female cast is jumbled in more ways than one, his friendships are vital and we own many platonic moments (smile Rei), but Evangelion

The fandom for acclaimed anime Neon Genesis Evangelion has developed some remarkably bizarre attitudes and ideas about the series they love. I'm not talking here about the speculation regarding the actual narrative itself--the questions of "what the hell did I just monitor, what happened in the last two episodes, why is there a stay action shot of people in a movie theater, was this sort of a Freudian thing..."--which perform get pretty bizarre at times, but which are on the whole adorable innocuous. These are ideas that despite their strangeness simply attempt to clarify the basic narrative of the original series, the film that followed, and the heavily altered narrative of the reboot films (of which, out of four total, three possess been released. We're still waiting to see whether the fourth one explains what the hell happened in the third one).

Shinji has a clear (and disturbing at times) sexual attraction to Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and Misato Katsuragi.
