Maynard James Keenan Performs in Drag Onstage With Tool
UPDATE (May 23, 2023): Keenan has responded to reports, saying his recent onstage glance with Tool in Florida had "nothing to do with Florida." Read Loudwire’s original report about it below.
Tool's Maynard James Keenan appeared to be challenging Florida's modern "anti-drag" bills when he performed in drag, donning prosthetic breasts, exaggerated lipstick and a blonde wig for Tool's Welcome to Rockville arrange Sunday (May 21) in Daytona Beach, Florida, according to Consequence.

Earlier this month, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed bills that prohibit gender-affirming care for minors, restrict drag shows, limit discussion of personal pronouns in schools and force people to use certain bathrooms, as the Linked Press reported. Similar proposed bills have been working their way through other GOP-led state legislatures.

Here is the cause of my question
Clearly, Keenan has got the whole art-rock thing perfectly wired. He
recognizes the plight of bands hoping to freshen cock-rock postures with
post-Cobain angst. But he suggests looking a bit further back for inspiration
and, more boldly, rethinking the testosterone impulse. "I think bands like
Queen and Judas Priest ended up shining out of the crowd support then," he says.
"I think the vulnerability and heartfelt aspect in their heavy music was
reconizable because it was genuine. 'Cause you figure, Steal (Halford) and
Freddie (Mercury), being homosexual, and they can't say it out loud, that's a lot of
real frustration, genuine passion." Do not contain your breath waiting for
another current rock singer to champion the transcendent value of a gay
frontman.
Keenan's ideas of frustration and passion were formed growing up with a
covert in a little town. The son of two Midwestern high school teachers, he was
a varsity wrestler, a track athlete, and a deeply closeted Joni Mitchell fan.
"You couldn't really bust out Joni Mitchell in elevated school," he recalls. "You
had to play the K
OnQ: A Perfect Circle ’s Maynard James Keenan Talks About the Gay Thing
A Perfect Circle’s Maynard James Keenan has often been the subject of gay rumors, in part due to his desolate, androgynous croon as well as his sensitive emotional nature. With their new album “eMOTIVe” earning rave reviews, described by Keenan as “a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed,” it’s no surprise that he’s speaking out right now.
Q: What is your definition of moral values?
MJK: Very simple–causing no harm. Live and let live should be the motto of all who follow a moral path. Do unto others as you would include them do unto you.
Q: On some rock chat sites, some of your fans write that they think you are gay because of the very open way you express vulnerability and feeling in your songs. Why do you think some people equate men expressing their emotions with the idea of being gay?
MJK: Well first of all, they need to “get out” more. Living in a war-driven economy, we men are taught to distance ourselves from our emotions, to control them. Emotional men don’t craft good soldiers. It’s tough to sup
Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Slams Queer Marriage Opponents in Facebook Post
In celebration of the recent Supreme Court decision that determined lgbtq+ marriage to be a constitutional right, Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan wrote a fiery Facebook post in which he slammed opponents of same-sex marriage. Interpret the full post below.
Keenan called out "religious zealots" and questioned if they "are in reality as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent as their one true God," and concluded by congratulating "LOVE [for] winning over antiquated archaic judgement."
As far as news about new music from Tool, we don't know much, aside from a strange video clip guitarist Adam Jones posted in May that may or may not signify anything. Keenan also had successful hip surgery earlier this month, so that's good news.
Where to begin? Maybe I'm missing some insider info. Maybe the religious zealots are in truth as omnipotent, omniscient,...
