For some individuals, to be a gender diverse male (someone who is assigned female at birth and identifies as male) in this day is hard enough. But when you add in naming as gay (attracted to men and identifying as male), it can generate life even more difficult. As a transgender gay male, I know this first hand. As a therapist who has worked with many transgender men who also spot as gay, I know that it is common for gay trans men to experience a flooding of thoughts when being out in the male lover male community. Some of these involve anxiety and dread , especially when going to bars and clubs. Most of these clients participate the fear that not having a penis could set them in a precarious situation. Their thoughts generally collapse into the obeying themes: 

• Would someone uncover out they don’t have a penis?
• Would someone hurt them, or even sexually assault them, because they don’t include a penis?
• Will they be able to go to the bathroom without stress and bother?
•  Is someone going to form rude comments, or fetishizing ones, or tell them they don’t belong?
• How much of their darkness is going to be spent in

  “Are you hung/XL”?

  If you’re a queer guy, chances are that question has shaped a nice chunk of your Grindr life. Sure, it’s a casually posed enquiry. But the question reinforces the stigma surrounding penis size – particularly in male-male hook-up culture – that drives many men to feel ashamed, embarrassed or undesirable.

  “Whether or not your penis size is objectively above, below, or exactly average, what your anxious mind tells you might be quite different. Body dysmorphia is no joke, and mental health deserves to be taken seriously,” explains Dr Sam Miles, PhD research fellow in social science at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

  Having a preference is one thing. But as Sam tells me, certain preferences get idealised and strengthened through their repetition in media culture – with particular reference to porn and dating apps. The outcome, of course, risks edging out bodies, people and identities perceived to be “different”.

  While some research suggests that there might indeed be some truth to this concept, the findings warrant a hefty dose of caution. Here why:

  The main analyze cited as support for the idea that same-sex attracted men are more skillfully endowed that heterosexual men was published in 1999 in the Archives of Sexual Behavior. What the authors of this investigation did was analyze statistics collected by the Kinsey Institute between the years 1938 and 1963.

  Specifically, they looked at data from 5,122 men, of whom 935 were classified as homosexual and 4,187 were classified as heterosexual on the basis of their sexual behaviors.

  Measurement data were available for both flaccid and erect penile length and girth, as adequately as men’s own estimated erect penile length. Participants had taken the measurements themselves and mailed them to the Institute.
